Imaginary Pictures Make Broadcast Awards Shortlist with Technology Innovation

London, 23 November 2023 – Imaginary Pictures and the Digital TV Group (DTG) have been recognised for their ground-breaking motion capture technology developed in collaboration with Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour.  Shortlisted for the Best Innovation Project at the Broadcast Tech Innovation Awards, Imaginary Pictures used markerless motion capture technology on-location, to generate 3D content for visual effects.

The Broadcast Tech Innovation Awards celebrates the role technology plays in creating and broadcasting the most outstanding productions of the past year and takes place on 29 November at The Brewery, London.  The Imaginary Pictures project, which is part of the Innovate UK Creative Catalyst programme, was overseen by DTG and brought to life by Pathway XR Studios to create stunning visual effects.

The Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour brings the multi-award-winning TV series at venues across the UK in January and February 2024. Imagery Pictures created a wide range of 3D model content from a single capture session, on a single day during a live tour.  The aim was to create a dance sequence asset in an efficient, cost-effective manner that can repeatedly deployed over time.

“With our six-month project we pushed what can be created with markerless motion capture technology to completely new levels,“ says Kevin Zemrowsky, Technical Director, Imaginary Pictures. “We’ve developed technology to capture everything live on-location rather than in the studio. We see this as transformational for the industry as it makes it easier and much less costly for content creators to monetise their intellectual property across many genres and platforms.

“We are delighted to be nominated for a Broadcast Tech Innovation award.  It’s incredible to have been recognised in this way alongside industry giants including BBC, ITV, ITN and BT.”
